Why there is a difference in making money then and now

Some things that I have been noticing in the past few years is the mass amount of get-rich-quick schemes all over the internet posted almost every day, there has to be something more to all of this nonsense.

It all started one day when I was grabbing a mod from a modding service and I was redirected to a website called “adfocus” I was very confused and just thought that it was a typical download hub for files where I could grab my stuff and leave without any problems. Well boy was I wrong. What I was actually getting into was the only time in my life where I have ever fell for a scam ad on the internet. Basically what this supposed website was saying was a warning that my PC may be outdated and I should read an article so that I can continue to my files. After leading me through a hellhole of different websites and places, I finally was at my destination. Or was I? The place that it had actually led me to was a website packed with a software bomb which somehow managed to bypass all integrations from my antivirus at the time. Me being horrified that I had accidentally gotten myself scammed, I had very quickly uninstalled everything that it had installed on my device. Thankfully my antivirus blocked the bad stuff from really doing some damage but it took me a long time to fish out all the stuff that was junking up my computer at the time.

So why is this story important? Here is why. A few months later after I had been scrolling through mods again, I had decided that I was going to revisit this site, but this time not through the link. Here is what I found.

This site has a system where you can give out links to your website, but then get them monetized off of ads displayed on the redirect page. This shocked me because there was a sudden jolt of “I can get myself payed for my work,” but then I remembered the horrors this thing brought me through and I just left it at that.

A year or two later I have seen more of these things pop up in the course of my time. A good example of this being called “affiliating.” Not necessarily a bad technique that gives people issues, I would totally decide to do this instead of the whole link shortener thing. Basically what happens is you go and find a company you want to help out, and they give you an advertising key. What you go and do from there is you spread that key around (typically in the form of an ad), and when someone goes through that link and buys something, you get a piece of the pie.

So why is this a problem?

Because we are people and we are all naturally flawed, we for some reason think that because one person goes through and does this successfully and lives off of it means that we all can. But here is the sad truth. You typically can’t.

In the last month or two, I have seen people complaining about how their NFTs won’t sell or there has been a spike of less advertising revenue, but that it because people are just getting bored of it. The last thing that you want to do is go and shoot for the impossible, and possibly damage yourself in the cost of failure. Sure if you are an artist and NFTs are your hobby I am not saying that you shouldn’t do your thing, but if you are just in it for the money, typically you won’t get a whole lot.

To wrap this up I just want to put out a disclaimer here that there is a whole range of ways you can make money online that are a whole lot better than the others, like making t-shirts for example. But if you are looking to make big bucks fast, you should probably double-check what you are doing just in case it may not be the best decision in the first place.

Was this article interesting? Be sure to tell me in the comments.
